Silloth-on-Solway has several claims to fame. It has one of the best links golf courses in the UK, it was once home to that famous English contralto Kathleen Ferrier (1912-53), and it is from its small harbour that the boats leave to fish for that delicacy that is the Solway Brown Shrimp.

Silloth is situated on the Solway coast, around twenty three miles from Carlisle, with views over to Scotland to the North and Skiddaw and the Lake District to the South. It is for this reason that it is a very popular holiday destination, making it an ideal base for visiting Cumbrias’ many attractions.

Below is a picture taken from Silloth, looking over to Criffel in Scotland. The stretch of water is the Solway Firth. The old adage in these parts is, when you can see Criffel it’s going to rain, when you can’t see Criffel, it’s raining! When this photo was taken it was just about to rain!
